Why do people look for another AI chat app?
Usually one of six reasons: it does not remember, the voice feels off, nothing happens unless you open it, the characters are not to your taste, adult content is mixed in, or the cost. What you check next depends on which one it was.
When you search for an alternative the reason already exists. If you switch without naming it, you tend to switch again for the same reason. Find your case in the table below first. This page does not claim what any particular service does at the moment, because features and policies change and an out-of-date comparison is worse than none; instead each row says how to check for yourself.
What should you check for each complaint?
Each complaint has its own test. For memory, see whether it brings up a small fact days later; for voice, read the sample lines in the store screenshots; for who starts the chat, look for push notifications.
| If the problem was | Check this way | In Beff |
|---|---|---|
| It forgets conversations | Drop a small fact and watch whether it comes back days later | Episodes, facts and feelings accumulate and are quoted in later chats |
| The voice feels translated or stiff | Read sample lines in the store screenshots | Casual or polite speech set per character |
| Nothing starts unless you open it | Is push mentioned, and is it timer-based or situation-based? | Twelve signals; pushes arrive even when the app is closed |
| Characters are not to your taste | Does the first screen show a gallery, a creation screen, or both? | A community of user-made cards and your own creator, with the same situation fields |
| Adult content mixed in | Store age rating first, then the content policy | For ages 14 and up and not an adult app; a 19+ setting veils 19 cards' pictures |
| Cost | How many turns the free window allows per day | A 5-day free trial, then plans or bebe packs |
The seven general criteria behind each row are written up in the AI companion comparison.
What happens to your chat history when you switch?
In almost every case it does not transfer. Memory is built differently in each service and there is no standard export, so switching is effectively starting over. Count that as a cost before you move.
So reverse the order: try the new app in its free window for a few days, check that the voice and memory suit you, and only then move. Deleting the old app comes after. Using both for a short while is fine; within days it is usually clear which one you keep opening.
What should you check before switching?
Check the new app's training use and your right to delete first. The better an app remembers you, the more it knows about you, so how it handles that data matters more than any feature.
- Training use. Look in the privacy policy for a plain statement that chats are not used to train models. If it is vague, assume they are.
- Deletion. Can you delete at once inside the app, or must you email a request, and when are backups purged?
- Age and content policy. The store age rating is the fastest signal.
- Billing. In-app purchase? Can you cancel inside the app? What is the refund policy?
- Cleaning up the old app. If you move, delete the old account too; chats left in a service you no longer use are the most common neglect.
The data items are covered in more detail in the safety and privacy guide.
How is Beff different from Zeta and Character.AI?
The way you pick a card is the same; what happens after you add it is not. In Beff an added character shows up somewhere in your own neighbourhood on the map, lives a daily routine, texts you first when conditions fit, and remembers earlier conversations.
Zeta and Character.AI are widely known for letting you chat with characters other users made, and Beff's Community uses the same frame: character cards, creators and chat counts. If you only count cards the two look alike. The split comes after the add. The table below lists Beff's side only. It does not mean other services lack the same thing; features and policies change often, so the right-hand column says how to check a candidate app yourself.
| Criterion | In Beff | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| After you add a character | It appears at a random place in your own neighbourhood on the map, lives a routine and texts first when it is nearby | Does the character exist outside the chat window (location, schedule, push notifications)? |
| Situation setup | Every card has relationship, current situation, first line, speech style, background and tags; the same fields when you make one | Open a card: how specific are the first line and the situation? |
| Memory | Facts, feelings and episodes accumulate and are quoted in later chats | Drop a small fact and see whether it comes back unprompted days later |
| Art style | Realistic photo, anime or cartoon; pictures that character sends keep the same style | Do images you receive in chat keep the original style? |
| Creators | Creator profile with a crown; 10% of the bebe from each paid add goes to the creator | Is the creator page and reward rule written down in the app? |
| Scale | The card count may be smaller than long-established large services | Scroll past the popular cards down to the newest ones |
To be straightforward: if card count and breadth of genres matter most, a larger service may suit you better. If you want one character you keep talking to, and that character to be woven into your neighbourhood and your day, that is where Beff fits. The general seven criteria are in the table above on this page, and the switching checklist is in Character.AI alternatives.
When does Beff fit and when does it not?
It fits if you want to build a long conversation with one character, want it to text you first, and want it tied to your neighbourhood and your day. It does not fit if you want a very large library of characters to sample briefly, or adult content.
It fits
- You were tired of re-explaining everything each time: memory is a core feature.
- You wanted it to start the conversation: it texts first.
- You want to design a character in detail, or pick a user-made one and have it appear in your neighbourhood.
It does not fit
- You want thousands of characters to sample briefly: the Beff community may have fewer cards than large, long-established services.
- You want adult content: Beff is for ages 14 and up and is not that kind of app.
- You want to meet real people: Beff has no such feature.
Key points
- Name what was wrong before you switch, or you will switch again for the same reason.
- Chat history does not carry between apps; count the cost of starting over.
- Try the new app free for a few days before moving, and clean up the old one afterwards.
- The better an app remembers you, the more training use and deletion rights matter.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Character.AI alternative?
It depends on why you want to leave. If it forgets, test memory; if nothing starts unless you open it, look for situation-based push notifications; if the cast is not to your taste, look at whether the app has both a gallery and a creator. Beff is one option for people who want one character they keep talking to, tied to their neighbourhood.
Is Beff an alternative to Zeta?
Beff's community uses the same frame of character cards, creators and chat counts. What differs is what happens after you add a card: it appears in your neighbourhood on the map, lives a routine, texts first and remembers. Check any app yourself for the features you care about.
Does my chat history move to a new app?
In almost every case it does not. Memory differs by service and there is no standard export, so moving is starting over.
Is Beff free to try?
Every account starts with a 5-day free trial of 10 turns a day. Prices for plans and bebe packs are on the plans page and in the store checkout.
Does Beff have adult content?
Beff is not an adult app and is for ages 14 and up. A card marked 19 shows a clear picture only to users who switched on the 19+ setting, which needs you to be 19 or older.
Does Beff connect me with real people?
No. The characters are AI, and Beff does not introduce or match you with real people or arrange offline meetups. In the community you can add AI characters other users made and post in a card's public live chat.
